On the Health Benefits of Just about Anything – A Review
You’ve heard it all. Some metal cures some obscure disease, taking longer colder showers lowers the risk of getting the flu, taking shorter hotter showers increases your longevity, and so on.
I am a natural skeptic. It doesn’t take much for me to assume something’s a bit too good to be true. I’d prefer that there’s at least some peer reviewed medical research before I go out and spend $50 on a copper bracelet or worse, spend 5 minutes under freezing cold water.
But. I always seem to forget one of the greatest health benefits of all, peace of mind.
See, nothing sets me up better for a day than a good cup of coffee and putting on comfortable clothes. Neither of those things actually contribute to my general long term health in a way that I can directly feel, but it still is sensible that either of these things actually do manage to make my life better.
Of course, other things directly affect my health a lot more, like being prepared for the day or having a full night’s rest. But I’ll often be able to get around either of those things by just enjoying a comfortable start to my day.
I think peace of mind or the placebo affect has a greater hold on me than my skeptic mind would care for. And I think that’s okay, because at the end of the day, well, sometimes that’s what I needed to get through that day.
Sorry for another short one. I’ll get a hold on this, eventually!
Have a great weekend!
