On the Peacefulness that Comes only from Having an Eyelash Stuck in your Eye - A Review
It’s 2:30. I need to be up in 2 and a half hours, well, that’s what I tell myself. I know that I actually don’t need to be up until 5:50, so that way I can take my uber trip, get dressed, and shower, not necessarily in that order.
But instead, I lay staring at the ceiling. Listening to the sounds of Brooklyn out the window.
I’m not a light sleeper, but I’m not a heavy sleeper either. But that doesn’t really matter, because not a single noise in the world was keeping me up. What was keeping me up was the short, pointed, dagger-like piece of hair wedged deep on top of my eye.
To be fair, I spend most nights staring at the ceiling. I can be exhausted, physically or mentally and still not be able to sleep. I try not to complain about it, because it’s just a part of my life. But last night I knew. I KNEW. Sleep could come.
But instead of sleep. I was met with a constant nagging reminder that there was a foreign body invading my space.
Let’s be honest. It doesn’t hurt much. But it does hurt constantly.
But for some reason, when it was the best time to go to the dentist, I found peace in that subtle hidden knife.
I’m not an advocate for pain as a therapy. I’ve lived in that world on accident, and it was not a good place. But for whatever reason, an eyelash stuck in my eye was enough to convince me that everything was tolerable. That I could beat any system or world that offended me, attacked me, or tried to stop me.
I knew that if I could consistently deal with this (minor) problem, that all the other stresses in my life could be batted away like ping pong balls.
So, then, at 2:30am. I took a deep breath. Closed my eyes, making it hurt more, and then fell asleep.
I woke up with the eyelash still in my eye, but now I was finally numb to the pain, not anything else.
Thanks for reading and have a great rest of your week.
Apologies for this not being posted on Wednesday. I just didn’t work with my time effectively. My fault.
But. Hey, it was mostly finished on Wednesday, so I think it counts.
